4 — AM Supplement F E A T U R E T he winner of the 2015 International Additive Manufacturing Award is Hybrid Manufac- turing Technologies of Plano, Texas, and Leicestershire, U.K. Company cofounder Jason Jones, Ph.D., attended the recent Manufacturing for Growth meeting in Orlando, Florida, where he accepted the award on behalf of Hybrid. The company's innovation, and its core prod- uct, is a self-contained laser cladding head that mounts in a machining center's spindle (using a toolholder) to enable the "subtractive" CNC machine to apply additive manufacturing as part of its capabilities. A machine tool builder adopt- ing Hybrid's system can use it to add additive manufacturing to the capabilities of a standard machine. Multiple machine tool builders have done this, perhaps most notably Mazak, which introduced an additive-capable model to its line of Integrex multitasking machine tools last year. Meanwhile, machine tool end users can purchase the system to retroft an existing machine tool to Jason Jones to Speak at Additive Manufacturing Conference, October 20-21 Additive Manufacturing magazine and Oak Ridge National Laboratory are partnering to host the new Additive Manufacturing Conference debuting this fall in Knoxville, Tennessee. Building on the success of an additive manufacturing workshop last year at IMTS, the Conference will be much more than a 3D printing event, focusing specifcally and exclusively on industrial applications of additive technology to produce functional metal parts and tooling. Jason Jones of Hybrid Manufacturing Technologies (pictured) will be one of the speakers. Other speakers from companies and institutions applying AM will ad- dress additive processes, materials, the opportunities for AM, and its challenges and practical considerations. The event also includes tours of Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Manufacturing Demonstration Facility and car maker Local Motors. Highlighting Hybrid Manufacturing The winner of the frst International Additive Manufacturing Award is a company that developed a head for adding metal additive manufacturing to an existing machine tool. The victory highlights the signifcance of combining additive and subtractive processes into a single machine. By Peter Zelinski
