AUGUST 2017 Additive Manufacturing TECH REVIEW 40 Software Adds AM Simulation Capabilities CGTech's Additive module for Vericut is capable of sim- ulating both the additive manufacturing and traditional machining capabilities of hybrid CNC machines. The company says the software's realistic simulation of the entire hybrid process enables customers to verify that the part will be built correctly, without causing damage to the part, machine or laser equipment. Simulation in Vericut 8.1 uses the same postprocessed NC code that drives the CNC machine. Users can virtually experiment with additive and metal removal processes to determine optimal hybrid machining production methods. Enclosures Help Reduce Warping and Shrinkage 3D Platform is releasing new two new sizes of enclosures for its WorkSeries line of large-format 3D printers, one for the 100, 200 and 300 series, which will retrofit to x1000 machines as well, and one for the 400 series. The enclosures are designed to be backwards compatible, so they will work with every 3D Platform ma- chine. They are designed for easy installation, although the x1000 ma- chines requires an adapter kit. The design of the enclosures is said to provide a controlled and stable en- vironment which reduces warping and shrinkage. The enclosure also keeps the bed and print layers clean, useful in a factory or shop setting. Direct Metal 3D Printer Offers Compact Footprint Xact Metal introduces its XM200, an industrial metal 3D printer offering high performance and affordability. The small printer features a build volume of 125 in. 3 (5" × 5" × 5"), or 2,049 cm 3 (127 × 127 × 125 mm). Its compact footprint enables one or several systems to be placed within even a small work area. The 3D printer is equipped with a 250-W fiber laser and high-speed scanner that fuses at speeds ranging to 1.5 m/sec. A constantly orthogonal laser beam enables consistent fusing characteristics throughout the complete build area. Its software architecture is said to be intuitive and supportive of visual workflows. Metal AM System Adds Four Full-Field Lasers Additive Industries has launched a full-field four-laser option for the MetalFab1, enabling the printing of large parts without stitching or being restricted to zones. All lasers can be used on the full build plate and automatic laser-to-laser self-calibration ensures a tight alignment. A modular architecture enables users to start with one or two lasers and add more later. The design also creates redundancy; if one laser is down, the others can still finish the full build job after an automatic reassignment of the lasers. Stereolithography 3D Printer Designed for Flexibilty Available from RP Sales America, the UnionTech Pilot SD stereolithography 3D printer supports any 355-nm material and can realize 0.002" (0.05-mm) layer thickness. The resulting parts are said to demonstrate excellent sidewall quality and fine detail, contributing to lower post-finishing requirements. The 3D printer offers a build envelope measuring 9.8" × 9.8" × 9.8" (250 × 250 × 250 mm). Scanning speed ranges from 6 to 12 m/sec. A closed-loop control that regulates platform movement, laser power, resin level, resin temperature and vac- uum pressure, plus a granite recoater rim, help to ensure accuracy and stability. /
