MAY 2018 Additive Manufacturing TECH REVIEW 38 Entry-Level Plastic Laser Sintering System Produces Detailed Parts Farsoon's eForm is an entry-level plastic laser sintering (PLS) system that is designed to have the functionality and power of an industrial additive manufacturing machine. New processing systems combined with the company's control software help achieve detailed and functional parts. The 3D printing system comes standard with a streamlined touchscreen interface for easy operation. The system also includes the company's self- developed software, which enables a variety of functions from build preparation to machine control and operations, while maintaining com- patibility with third-party software and material. Digitally Augmented Parts Possible with 3D Printing Process Rize has announced the ability for its 3D printing technology to create Digitally Augmented Parts (DAP), functional parts augmented with digital information. With the company's Augmented Polymer Deposition (APD) 3D printing process, which combines extrusion and materi- al jetting, users can 3D print industrial parts with embedded markers such as QR codes which can be scanned to access corresponding information online. This aug- mentation is said to counter noncompliance due to design changes, piracy, counterfeit- ing and obsolescence. Powder-Bed Fusion System Supports Low-Cost Metal 3D Printing Xact Metal's XM200S powder-bed fusion metal 3D printer is said to be ideal for printing of small parts where high performance and speed are critical, for applications in industries such as aero- space and medical. The low-cost system has a small footprint which allows for simple integration into the lab or manufac- turing floor. It prints a wide range of metals—including aluminum, stainless and tooling steel, super alloys, and titanium—and is designed with an open architecture that enables users to develop their own printing parameters or use their own powders. The 3D printer's build volume 5" × 5" × 5" (127 × 127 × 127 mm), enabling users to print multiple parts efficiently and quickly. A 200-W Yb fiber laser provides optimal power density to print 20- to 100-micron layers with a spot size greater than 50 microns. The printer's recoater uses a bulb-shaped element to spread powder like a blade, but with compaction similar to a rolling element. The design enables the recoater to negotiate out-of-plane growth and continue printing, Xact Metal says. 3D Printer Series Supports Full-Color Printing HP has introduced its Jet Fusion 300 / 500 series of 3D printers, enabling manufacturers to produce engineering-grade, functional parts in full color, black or white with voxel control. The series includes the HP Jet Fusion 340 (black and white) and 380 (color) printers, intended for customers who have smaller part-size or batch-size needs, and the HP Jet Fusion 540 (black and white) and 580 (color) print- ers, featuring a bigger build size for larger parts or heavier production demands. The printers feature a compact design, enhanced workflow, and integrated and automated materials delivery system. The 300 / 500 series printers are intended for small- to medium-sized product development teams and design businesses, entrepreneurs, and universities and research institutions. With this portfolio expansion, HP aims to provide users the ability to prototype and produce on the same platform. The series supports OBJ, VRML and 3MF color file formats. The printers are suitable for use in healthcare, automotive, consumer goods and other industries. The Jet Fusion 300 / 500 series will ultimately support materials similar to those used by the Jet Fusion 3200/4200/4210, including the recently launched HP 3D High Reusability CB PA 12, as well as unique materials that enable color or other voxel-level capabilities.
